Keeping Kids Safe Online

Whole new worlds open up when you use the Internet. It's a virtual super-highway that takes you to new places where you learn new things. But this highway can be dangerous too and you need "street smarts" in order to protect yourself.

"Street smarts" include taking the following safety precautions:
  • Bookmark this site so you don't have to type in the address each time you come back.
  • Don't give out confidential information like your last name, your address or telephone number, or credit card number.
  • If you see something that is confusing or threatening, tell an adult.
  • Use "Control, Alt, Delete" on your keyboard to get rid of pop-up ads.
  • Use the "back" button if you get somewhere that you did not intend to be.
ScholarShop's Options for Kids will also help to help protect the young people who use this web site. We will not ask our users for confidential information nor allow advertisements on our site. (Note: there may be advertisements on some of the web sites mentioned in the "Cool Links" sections.)

Parents and teachers, remember that young people are not deliberately trying to expose themselves to hazardous situations on the Internet. However, they don't always realize what the hazards are or how to respond when they face one. A discussion regarding appropriate safety measures and responses will not only help with protection, it will allow the youth to preserve their dignity. When children learn how to be "street smart" they can better safeguard themselves in potentially dangerous situations.

To make sure that the expectations for safe Internet use are clearly understood, we recommend Internet Use Contracts. Sample Internet use contracts can be found on the web sites below. Find one that's right for you or make one of your own. Have everyone sign it and post it near your computer as a reminder. Scholarship America also has a more extensive list of resources for keeping youth safe online in the "For Students" section at http://scholarshipamerica.org/scholarshop.html.
